|At a recent session for Staples Canada Spotlight I had the opportunity to deliver on the topic of: The Art of Single Tasking, so I thought we should share a few insights.
We all multi-task and some of us think we are masters. Multitasking refers to the ability to manage multiple responsibilities at once by focusing on one task while keeping track of others.
In the workplace, this involves switching back and forth between tasks and performing them rapidly one right after the other. Studies have shown that the average professional spends about 23 percent of the day emailing and switches betweens apps up to 300 times a day. The effects of this behavior decrease productivity and efficiency.
A study by neuroscientists showed that when people focus on two tasks simultaneously, each side of the brain takes on a different task, suggesting a two-task limit on what the human brain can handle. Taking on more tasks increases the likelihood of errors and efficiency.
Focus is so important because it is the gateway to all of our thinking: perception, memory, learning, reasoning, problem solving, creativity and decision making. Here’s a simple reality:
“If you can’t focus effectively, you can’t think effectively.”
We recommend you integrate single-tasking into your day to day and see how your focus, productivity and effectiveness increase. Be fully present and immerse yourself into the task at hand. We know it will make a difference!
